Cherington Kicking Tires on Trumbo & Pierzynski
Ben Cherington is doing his due diligence on back-up planning in the event that Mike Napoli does not re-sign & in the event of injury to David Ross. Mark Trumbo is a 27 year old power hitter who has 3 full years of life in the big leagues with Anaheim / LA Angels. (What a stupid name for a team - LA Angels of Anaheim!) Trumbo averaged 150 games played over the past 3 years, so he's durable. Notwithstanding a drop in batting average & lots of K's a la Napoli, Baseball Reference shows that he would average 33 HR's & 100 RBI over a 162 game schedule. That's a little better than the power numbers for Giancarlo Stanton who I also like. Trumbo is under control until 2017 before hitting free agency. Guys like Trumbo & Stanton interest me since they have incentive to play well as they approach their walk years. On the other hand, a guy like A.J. Pierzynski does not interest me at age 36. His legs have caught a lot of games over the years. He is a 16 HR/76 RBI guy like Saltie only older. If the Sox don't sign a catcher or comes to terms with Saltie, I would go with Ross, Lavarnway & Vasquez with power hitting catcher Dan Butler in the wings. Let's stay with the 25-29 year olds, Ben, not the 35+ geriatrics.

I think Saltie & Ross are both back up catchers. If I were to choose one, I would go with Ross because of his rapport with the pitchers. Lavarnway is a #3. I wouldn't waste $$ trying to sign Salty unless they can get him for cheap.
