Martinez & Kotchman to Boston

No question that the Red Sox did more than any other AL East team to improve their ballclub for the stretch run. Victor Martinez & Casey Kotchman come to Boston while Justin Masterson & Adam LaRoche leave.

Thank you. I have been saying all along that Victor solves several pieces for the Red Sox in one fell swoop. He is a more-than-adequate catcher to spell Varitek who is beat up physically. He can play 1B, if needed, to spell Lowell. And he is a middle of the order guy who can also DH to help pick-up some of the offensive slack. I got to see Victor a lot this year in Spring Training & he is just a smooth customer. He is a rock star. Victor will love Boston.

In addition, don't discount Casey Kotchman as an important piece to the puzzle. If both Varitek & Lowell go down, Kotchman is a dirt dog at 1B that always played well against the Red Sox, whether for the Angels or Braves. He is also a nice bat off the bench. LaRoche was never going to be happy as a part-time guy.

On the flip side, it's sad to see a classy kid like Justin Masterson go. He has the right attitude in seeing a new door open to his career in Cleveland. Instead of a spare part, he becomes an integral part of their starting pitching core. Good luck, Justin. You are one classy person.

Let the games begin for the final 1/3 of the season. Theo, you did good!

Trade Deadline Is Here

Most sports shows in & out of Boston expect the Red Sox to make a blockbuster deal before today's 4:00 PM deadline. Why? Because of the multitude of solid prospects in their farm system.

In the minors I think it's anyone goes with a few exceptions -- Kelly, Tazawa to name two. In the majors there are also only a few exceptions -- Youk, Pedroia, Lester, Beckett, & now Daniel Bard.

Between the minors & majors the Red Sox have enough trade bait to address their needs for 2009 & beyond. Another power hitter in the 3, 4, 5 spot. Another starting pitcher to replace the 40+ year olds & Dice-K. Another catcher to replace banged up Varitek.

Adrian Gonzalez, Victor Martinez, Roy Halladay & others are all still out there. Looking at the asking prices for Cliff Lee, Freedy Sanchez, Jake Wilson & George Sherrill it make not take that much to land one or two of these guys.

Given the inconsistent play lately, I'm OK with whoever they give up in order to get some new blood for the next two months & the playoffs.

David Ortiz & Steroids?

Big Papi is the latest name to be leaked as a player who tested positive in 2003 for performance enhancing drugs. Right away you have to question the story's validity -- a New York reporter servicing up smack on the Boston Red Sox. Maybe he was tired of all the Yankee names surfacing -- Clemens, Pettitte, A-Rod, Giambi.

Whatever the case, yes or no, it's a moot point. Look at how everyone has already forgotten Manny's 50 game suspension. If he did it, at least Ortiz will admit it -- a la Andy Pettitte. On the other hand Manny has never owned up to his own shortcomings. He never will. Most players never do. When it comes to pro athletes personal responsibility is dead.

I hope Ortiz conducts himself more like Pettitte than Manny.

Finally, A Win

I turned the game on today & we were winning 1-0. The A's scored 4 times in the 5th & I shut it off. I couldn't watch anymore. Maybe I should do that more often as the Sox came back to win 8-5.

With this win the Red Sox finish a subpar homestand at 4-3 & now go on the road for 10 games against the AL East. Good thing Baltimore just traded their closer to the Dodgers. At least we won't see Sherrill this series. It's now time for John Smoltz to stop talking & start pitching better in his start tomorrow.

We'll see if there are any new faces on the team as the trade deadline is a mere 24 hours away.

Sox Continue Their July Struggles

It's hard to be a Red Sox player, manager or fan these days. For some reason every Red Sox team struggles coming out of the All-Star break. This year is no different. With an 11-12 record in July this will be the worst month of the first four.

Losing again to the lowly A's 8-6 last night, coupled with a Yankees win, leaves the Sox 3 1/2 games off the pace. With only 1 home game left before a 10-game trip through Baltimore, Tampa Bay & New York the Sox need to find themselves. A poor road trip could open a gap, perhaps a big enough one, that would knock them out of the Wild Card. The Sox road record this year is under .500.

Theo & Co. need to pull off a big trade for a bat, for a pitcher, for anyone who can help this team down the stretch. Inconsistentcy rules right now. One night it's no offense. The next no pitching. Cliff Lee & Jack Wilson are gone. Why wait until Friday? Let's do something today.

First Big Trade: Phillies Get Cliff Lee

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking past their division. They want to repeat as World Series champs.

On their quest to repeat, the Phils today traded 4 prospects to the Cleveland Indians to land Cy Young Award Winner Cliff Lee. Ben Francisco goes to the Phillies as well in the 4-for-2 deal. Nice move by the Phillies who thought Toronto was asking too much for Roy Halladay.

Let's see if the Sox make the next major move for Adrian Gonzalez or Victor Martinez.

Goodbye Mark Kotsay

Just a quick thought on the trading of Mark Kotsay.

Kotsay was definitely a shot in the arm last year when he arrived on the Boston scene. His versatility at first & outfield play helped much during the stretch run & into the playoffs. Youk had moved to third due to Lowell's injury, so Kotsay played a lot of first base.

This year Mark never seemed to be right after coming back from back surgery where he missed the first few months of the season. His offense was down & the addition of a younger, natural 1B in LaRoche with more power set the stage for him to go.

Everyone says he was a great clubhouse guy & a pro in all ways. I'm sure he will do well in Chicago.

Sox Blow One

It was one of those losses that you can point back to at the end of the regular season if the Red Sox finish 1 game behind the Yankees. Leads of 6-2 & 7-4 disappeared with 3 runs in the 9th by the A's to tie the game 7-7 in regulation. The A's scored 2 in the 11th to win 9-8.

Other than Buchholz & Bard, the relief core from the 7th inning on was inneffective. Ramirez, Okajima, Papelbon, Saito & Delcarmen all gave up runs. It was group underachievement to the A's who pounded out 20+ hits. Shoddy fielding by Nick Green in the 9th contributed to the loss as well.

When the Red Sox score 7 runs at home you expect them to win. The Yankees lost to Tampa Bay, further exacerbating this loss, which a win would have moved the Sox to just 1-1/2 behind.

The Sox are just 11-11 in the month of July & struggling for consistentcy. Maybe a significant trade is needed to get some life back. We'll know in 3 days what Theo thinks.

1,000 Blog Visitors

It's amazing to think that 3nohitters is closing in on its 1,000th visitor.

Red Sox Nation is alive & well throughout the US & abroad. We have many daily visitors from New England, but also from the South, the Mid-West & the left coast. I particularly enjoy seeing visitors from abroad -- places like Venezuela, the Phillipines & Israel -- since I assume these visitors are U.S. military men & women who keep track of their favorite team. Please be safe & get home soon.

Our goal remains simple. Bring you a blog that raises questions & gives opinions about the Red Sox -- as if you were talking to your family & friends. We'll leave the commercialism to other sites.

Thank you for your past & continued support.

LaRoche Likes Boston

Adam LaRoche told a reporter that he couldn't tell what day it was on the field, whether it was Saturday or Monday. That's because the Red Sox, unlike Pittsburgh, play before a full house every night. His reference was made to smaller weekday crowds in Pittsburgh. Not so in Boston.

Like his former Pirate teammate Jason Bay, LaRoche likes Boston just fine. He is hitting over .400 in his first week & has already touched up the Green Monster for a homer & double. Adam is very fluid & effortless at 1B as well. He enjoys the playoff intensity of every game.

LaRoche's performance is making life difficult for Tito as he tries to rotate LaRoche with Youk & Lowell. I'd even let LaRoche DH once a week & give Ortiz a day off. It's a positive problem to have more good players than not enough. As with most situations, Tito's philosophy is that things have a way of working themselves out.

Beckett, Offense Too Much

Josh Beckett was once again dominant in a 10-K performance over 7 innings as the Sox beat the A's 8-3. The Sox offense also belted out 14 hits with every player garnering at least 1 hit. It was a nice win.

Take that same performance a week ago & Beckett could have lost 3-1 or 3-2 as the offense was scuffling mightily to score runs. Was last week an abberation or is this week? That's what Theo & Co. have to figure out before the trade deadline. Do you trade for a bat or another pitcher?

I recommend another power bat. The most talked-about hitters are Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres & Victor Martinez of the Indians. Pitchers Roy Halladay & Cliff Lee are still out there too. Maybe we get one of both. Only 4 days left & we'll know for sure.

Jim Rice Finally In

Congrats to Jim Rice & his family for finally making it into the Hall of Fame. It was a long & ardous journey, but the end result is a win.

As part of the famous Lynn, Rice & Evan outfield for several years in the 80's, Rice had to let his numbers do the talking with the sportswriters in this pre-steroid era. He needed all 15 years before enough of the writers finally embraced his body of work.

Jim's # 14 will be retired on Tuesday along with other Red Sox greats. Rice is only one of 4 players in the Hall to have played his entire career with the Sox. Doerr, Williams & Yaz are the others. Good company I'd say.

Congratulations again, Jim.

Smoltz Ineffective Again

John Smoltz is making a patient man impatient. Terry Francona may have to re-think his philosophy about Smoltz after another poor outing today which saw the Orioles defeat the Sox 6-2. All 6 runs came in 5 innings off of Smoltz.

The lack of an effective Smoltz also means that Theo & Co. may have to re-think trading Buchholz or Penny for a needed bat before the trade deadline on Friday. Of the 2, Penny has the bigger body of work to judge. His last start on Friday was excellent -- 7 innings, 1 run. Buchholz has also been effective in his 2 starts with the big club since the All-Star break.

Where do the Sox go from here with Smoltz? He is scheduled to pitch again on Friday in Baltimore. Another ineffective effort may relegate him to the bullpen when Tim Wakefield returns from the DL.

Victor Martinez: A Fit for the Sox

On yesterday's Red Sox broadcast on NESN Gordon Edes mentioned that the Sox are talking to the Indians about Victor Martinez. I believe that Edes said there was a proposal on the table.

If you read this blog at all, you know that I'm a huge proponent of getting Martinez in a Red Sox uniform. He can catch, play first & DH. He is a switch hitter with pop from both sides & is a lifetime .280 hitter. He solves the Jason Varitek & Mike Lowell dilemma going forward. Particularly with Varitek, he can catch fewer games & help bring Victor's game calling along.

Theo, pull the trigger on this deal.

Power Back On

The Red Sox offense is showing signs of a comeback. In their 7-2 win over the Orioles tonight there were 3 doubles & 2 homers. Maybe the offense is finding their groove again.

It's always a welcome sight to see Big Papi go yard with a 3-run jack. New guy Adam LaRoche made a favorable first impression with a 2-run shot of his own. Jacoby Ellsbury chipped in 2 doubles.

Jon Lester pitched into the 8th. Bard & Ramirez shutdown the Orioles the rest of the way. John Smoltz goes for the sweep tomorrow.

A Yankees loss today puts the Sox 1-1/2 behind. It's going to be a great stretch run.

Friday, July 24, 2009

Sox Win, Sox Win

It was an ugly 3-1 win over the Orioles tonight, but it was a win.

Again, great defense & excellent pitching. The offense scored 3 runs on a single, sac fly & fielder's choice. We'll take it. We'll take the win.

Brad Penny made a strong statement that he should remain in the starting rotation going 6+ innings with no earned runs. Delcarmen, Okajima & another dirty save for Pap closed the game out.

We should see the debut of newly acquired LaRoche tomorrow night.

Buerhle Perfect

Any pitchers, young or old, past or present, knows how hard it is to pitch a perfect game. Way back when, I was lucky enough to hurl several no-hitters. Never a perfect game though.

Every fans of baseball has to applaud what Mark Buerhle accomplished yesterday against a top-flight team like the Rays. Sure, you need a little luck like the catch in CF. But to be in attendance & see a perfect game is a memory of a lifetime. Good for all the White Sox fans who saw history yesterday.

Congrats to Mark Buerhle for a remarkable feat!

A Big Start for Brad Penny

The Sox can use another good pitching performance with hopes that their impotent bats from the last road trip will come alive at Friendly Fenway. Brad Penny gets to showcase his stuff against the Orioles in what could be another audition for teams interested in a trade.

More important than trade considerations, the Sox desperately need to get a win. It can be 1-0 or 20-19, but they need a win. The Yankees just keep winning against the sub .500 teams which has catapulted them into first. In August we have a home & away series with the Yankees which will be very interesting since the Sox won the first 8 games earlier in the season.

It's our turn to beat up on the Orioles & A's during this homestand. We are a much better team at home, so look for a 5-2,6-1 or 7-0 homestand to right the ship. We should also see more moves before the end of the trade deadline.

Hitting Over Pitching Trades

With a normal offensive output of 5 runs per game the Sox would be coming home with a 4-2 road record. Pitching & defense have been very steady. That leave the offense.

Here's a short list of guys that could help the Sox bolster their offense during the stretch run:

- Victor Martinez, Indians

- Michael Young, Rangers

- Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals

I'm not sure what it would take to get these guys, but we have plenty of players to give back. Kotsay, Bates, Bailey, Baldelli, & yes, even Mike Lowell, Manny Delcarmen, Justin Masterson, Michael Bowdon, Clay Buchholz, Brad Penny. With Wakefield, Smoltz & Dice-K in the wings we are still stacked with pitching.

Ada, LaRoche is a nice player who should contribute. Let's get another hitter though.

Time for Home Cooking

The Boston Red Sox have started the 2nd half with their worst road trip of the season, losing 5 out of 6 games to Toronto & Texas with a punchless offense. They again squandered a good pitching effort by Clay Buchholz & bullpen to lose 3-1. The one run came via a homer by #9 hitter Nick Green.

The Sox are a much better team at home & they need to be now to stave off the Wild Card threat from Tampa Bay & Texas who are just a couple of games behind. The Sox get some much need home cooking for 3 against the Orioles & 4 against the A's. They need a 5-2, 6-1, 7-0 kind of homestand to get back in the race.

Starting tonight newly acquired Adam LaRoche will have his chance to help the offense. It was pathetic to see some of the swings last night by the likes of Varitek & Kotsay. Dave Magaden better get off his duff & start working with these hitters. As the schedule heats up in August & September, we need to close out July within a few games of the Yankees & not fall farther back.

Victor Martinez, where are you?

Adam LaRoche Coming to Boston

Several sites indicate 29 year-old Adam LaRoche is coming to Boston from Pittsburgh for 2 prospects in the Sox farm system. LaRoche is an above-average hitter & fielder who could see time at first, maybe DH & even pinch hit.

Does this mean Mark Kotsay is on the move? Who knows? LaRoche could be the first piece of a bigger future deal as we get closer to the trade deadline. The first move has been made by the Sox front office in the trade deadline chest match.

I expect more moves.

Mysterious DL for Wake?

Tim Wakefield is on the DL with back soreness. He will be re-activated on August 2nd, right after the trade deadline. Coincidence? Let the conspiracy theories begin.

Wakefield going out means Clay Buchholz is back. Buchholz & Brad Penny have been rumored in numerous trades. This move by the Sox gives Buchholz more time to audition before the trade deadline & see whether he or Penny stays or goes.

9 more days until the trade deadline.

Where's the Beef?

There's no beef in that Red Sox offense since the All-Star break. A 1-4 start coupled with a 5-0 start by those darn Yankees finds the Sox in 2nd place today.

The only pitcher to win a game this half was Clay Buchholz who goes against Texas tonight in place of the newly DL'ed Tim Wakefield. Lester & Beckett both pitched well enough to win on a normal night when the Sox offense scores 5 or more runs. But runs have been hard to come by this week.

Take heart, Red Sox fans. Hitting will come & go, but good pitching will win more times than not. The bigger concern to me is to get Penny back to his winning ways & to get Smoltz away from the one big inning. Lester, Beckett & Buchholz give us a chance to win every time out.

As the trade deadline looms, I am still a proponent of adding Victor Martinez. His bat & his versatility in the field (a Kevin Youkilis of sorts) make him the best option for the helping the Red Sox this year & in the future.

Trade Deadline Deals

Sorry, folks, I'm changing my mind. I was of the opinion that the Red Sox should keep what they have & I thought that would be good enough to get them into the playoffs. Now I'm thinking that they could be the odd man out between the Yankees & Rays.

As usual, the Sox always have a good first half, struggle in July & right the ship in mid-August for the stretch run. The Yankees are a better 2nd half team & are now tied with the Sox in first. Tampa Bay is hanging around at 4 1/2 out.

I'm on board now that the Red Sox need another bat. The only guy out there versatile enough to get playing time in this lineup is Victor Martinez. Martinez gives you options at first, catcher & DH. He is also a back-up plan should Bay go elsewhere in 2010.

Here's my trade offer:

Sox get Victor Martinez.

Indians get Michael Bowdon, Laars Anderson & Brad Penny.

If we had to offer a 4th prospect, I'd do it. Other than Martinez, I don't see another guy out there that can add the versatility to impact this lineup.

Smoltz Fails Again

The John Smoltz experiment has not gone as planned. After every loss Smoltz keeps saying that he threw quality pitches. I beg to differ when you give up 3 home runs in the 6th inning.

Francona could have lifted Smoltz after 5 innings & 75 pitches with a 2-1 lead, knowing that the bullpen had Thursday off. But he left Smoltz in there to see if he could go 6 innings in a tight game. Answer - no.

Smoltz has possibly 2 more starts before the end of the month. If he can't improve by then, perhaps the Sox will move him to the bullpen & bring up Buchholz for the month of August. Games will be too important in August & September to continue an experiment.

Smoltz's Time To Shine

The Red Sox lost 2 out of 3 in Toronto over the weekend. Jon Lester pitched well enough to earn a win in the series finale on Sunday, but he was outdueled by Roy Halladay. Halladay's stock keeps going up on the trade market.

As the Sox roll into Texas with a one game lead over the Yankees, I think it's time for John Smoltz to step-up & get a much needed win for the club. He has had enough starts now to put everything together. Ex-teammate Kevin Millwood will be opposing him.

It's Smoltz's time to shine now.

Sox Win 4-1 to Start 2nd Half

It was the type of game that, as a coach, you tell your players this is how we want to win.

- Timely hitting by Kevin Youkilis & Big Papi.

- Excellent starting pitching by Clay Buchholz who proved he can again "bring it" at the Major League level.

- Good relief pitching to the tune of 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

- Steady defense all night long.

Recipe for the playoffs -- repeat last night's game 49 more times.

Lugo Not In Toronto

The Red Sox website is reporting that Julio Lugo is not with the team in Toronto. Terry Francona confirmed the news.

No need to feel bad if Julio Lugo is released. He will make $13.5 million over the next year & a half, whether any team picks him up or not.

Another shortstop experiment that just didn't work out for the Sox. It's eerie how that position has been a black hole over the years. Maybe Lowrie & Green can stabilize it for the rest of this year.

Red Sox Back in Action

For baseball junkies like myself it's been a long 4 days with no games. Shows like Big Brother just didn't cut it for me.

The Sox only have 1 off day during the rest of the month. Trips to Toronto, Texas & Baltimore with a homestand squeezed in-between with Baltimore & Oakland will finish out July. The schedule in August & September gets a lot tougher.

Thank goodness, baseball is back. Strap in for a good ride in the 2nd half.

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Pedro Martinez Back

Pedro is back in baseball as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are hoping that he can take up some slack & produce quality innings down the stretch.

Is Pedro a good signing? Maybe. It's the right team as the Phillies are hurting for pitching.

Maybe we'll get to see Pedro in the World Series if the Phillies & Red Sox make it back there. Wouldn't that be something!

Buchholz Gets His Chance

Clay Buchholz gets his chance to show that he belongs back in the big leagues. He gets the start for the Red Sox in Toronto on Friday.

There is no lack of buzz on talk shows about why Buchholz is getting this start.

- To showcase him as a key piece in a deal for Roy Halladay.

- To reward him for a good season at Triple A thus far.

- To drive up the price for Halladay from the Yankees & other suitors.

- To set-up the Sox pitching rotation after the All-Star break.

I go for the last one. The Sox didn't get crazy when Johan Santana was available. I don't see them being a serious bidder for Halladay this year. Let's win or lose with what we have.

NL Loses Again

Other than the Phillies & Cardinals winning recent World Series, the National League has shown themselves to be inferior to the American League. They lose another All-Star game 4-3 & go home losers for the 12th time in recent memory.

Inter-league play also bears out a superiority by the AL clubs. Combined win-lose records for all inter-league games is highly skewed in favor the Americans. The difference of a DH versus no DH gives the AL a more aggressive hitting philosophy over the NL style of 1 run at a time. The difference has been showing up more & more in recent years. NL pitchers coming to the AL usually produce higher ERA's.

Should the NL change to allow a DH? Should the AL go back to no DH? Either way, the difference between the leagues will continue & it may not be a bad thing. Fans get to see different philosophies & different styles of play.

Halladay Is The Hot Topic

At the All-Star break Roy Halladay is the talk of the baseball world as Toronto entertains offers for their premier pitcher.

How would you like to be a season ticket holder in Toronto? How about a player? Halladay is the one guy who give the Blue Jays a chance to contend in the toughest division in baseball. Trading him away, no matter how many prospects come back in return, is waiving the white flag.

Our podcast panel will discuss the Halladay question & others on Thursday. Should the Red Sox put in an offer for Halladay or look to add other pieces for the stretch run? How about Tito's choice of Clay Buchholz to start on Friday in Toronto? Coincidence? Like you, we have many opinions & many angles to cover.

Check our next podcast with Gaff, Steve & me.

Beckett Pitches Complete Game Shutout

It was a great Sunday.

- The sun was shining over New England for our first nice weekend of the summer with little or no rain.

- Josh Beckett was in total control over the Royals from start to finish.

- Aaron Bates made the most of what will probably be his last start with the big club with 3 hits & a nice play in the field.

- We finish the unofficial halfway point of the season alone at the top of the AL East.

It's all we can ask for. Thank you Sox.

Smoltz Gets Help From Bard

The Sox are up 9-1 early & end up winning 16-9 against the KC Royals. John Smoltz gives up 1 run over the first 5 innings to earn his first win in a Red Sox uniform. He must have gotten a little edgy when Delcarmen, Masterson & Okajima finished the 6th inning with a scant 9-7 lead.

Thank goodness for Daniel Bard who pitched the 7th & 8th, bringing sanity back to the game. Bard is being used in more important innings these last few outings. The Sox scored multiple times in the 8th, allowing Saito to finish off the game in the 9th.

Balls were flying all over the park. However, a win is a win. Starting today 2 games up on the Yankees, we know that first place is ours alone at the unofficial halfway mark for the All-Star break. It's going to be quite a 2nd half battle.

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Lester Outduels Bannister

Jon Lester continued his dominance of the KC Royals with an 8 inning, 4 hit, no run performance last night. He got a big RBI double from Pedroia the Destroya' in the bottom of the 8th & then a nice easy 1-2-3 close from Pap to finish it up.

Early in the year Lester was subject to one big inning every time he took the mound. I chalked that up to the signing of his first big multi-year contract with the Sox & trying to prove he was worth the money. He has settled down now to become the same consistent pitcher from 2008 with dominating stuff.

Lester & Beckett make up the best 1-2 punch that go left-right in the league. We need them to stay consistent in the 2nd half.

By the way, the Yankees lost so we are back in 1st place solo.

Friday, July 10, 2009

An Ugly Defeat

It was enough to drive you to drink. Or throw a shoe at the TV. The Red Sox lost the opener to the lowly KC Royals by a score of 8-6. Why was it frustrating?

1) It's Kansas City.

2) We had a 4 run lead with Penny pitching.

3) We have the best home record in baseball.

4) It's Kansas City.

5) The Yankees won & we are tied for first place now.

My thinking was we take 3 out of 4 or all 4 from the Royals & go into the All-Star break in first place. We can still win these last 3 games with Lester, Smoltz & Beckett pitching. We also need the Angels to beat the Yankees a few times out in LA this weekend.

Put last night's game in the ugly column.

Big Papi Making A Comeback

David Ortiz would like to forget the months of April & May where he struggled to hit .200 & found himself batting 6th in the order.

June was a big turnaround for the big guy with several home runs & an average closer to the .300 mark. July is looking to be a continuation of June. Ortiz hit a towering homer to right-center last night through a gusty wind to put 3 runs on the board. He is using all fields & driving in runs, important runs. Just what the doctor ordered while Mike Lowell is on the DL. We need a good dose of the old Ortiz for the rest of the year.

If the Sox can finish off the final 4-game series with Kansas City before the All-Star break in 1st place, that will be quite an accomplishment as Lowell rests up for a good 2nd half of the year. The Yankees & Tampa Bay are not going away.

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Another Dirty Save

Jonathan Papelbon has not had many 1-2-3 9th innings this year. Tonight was no exception as he gave up a run, but struck out the last 2 batters to preserve a 5-4 win for the Sox.

I admit being a nay-sayer about Pap this year. Too many hits. Too many runs. Too many pitches. But, as Yoda says, there is no try. You do or don't do. And Pap is a doer since he has converted 22 of 24 save opportunities this year.

It would be nice to have clean innings. But a win is a win, a save is a save. At the end of the day that is the only stat that matters.

For Sale: Roy Halladay

Anyone need a #1 starter in their rotation? Toronto is ready to deal Roy Halladay for the right package of players.

How dumb is that? Better yet, how would you like to be a season ticket holder in Toronto? Maybe management has given up on this year & they are ready to re-build. What does that say to the current players who have amassed a winning record so far this year?

It's very unlikely that Halladay would be traded within the AL East. He also would need to waive his no-trade clause. Probably a national league team -- Phillies, Dodgers, Mets, Cardinals, Braves, Brewers -- would pony up a parade of prospects & current players to get him.

To me, it's just a weird thing for Toronto to do at this stage of the season.

Beckett & Bullpen = Win

Sox pitchers came back in Game 2 to limit the A's to 2 runs & even the series with a 5-2 win. Offense from Jason Bay, Jason Varitek & Dustin Pedroia led the offense with key RBI's.

Beckett went 6 2/3 strong innings for his 10th win. Oki got his usually big out in the 7th with the tying run at the plate. Masterson came on for a scoreless 8th. Pap closed it down in a rainy 9th. Game over.

Who knows about the weather tomorrow? We seem to get rain everyday or every other day. Wakefield gets a chance to go for his 11th win. Yankees can't gain ground when we win.

Lowrie Looking Sharp

The Red Sox lost to Oakland 6-0, so no good news there. Let's go down on the farm instead.

I was able to watch Jed Lowrie yesterday in his rehab start for the Portland Sea Dogs. He looked fluid in the field & very comfortable with his swings at the plate. Lowrie went 3 for 5 at the plate with no errors in the field. His wrist & leg injuries seem to be a thing of the past.

Lowrie knows that he will be competing with Nick Green for the shortstop role. As he said in a postgame interview, his work at the Major League level last year is a good resume to build on.

Given that Lowrie is just about ready to return, Tito will need to find space on the 25-man roster for him. The most likely scenario is the release of Julio Lugo. The recent injury to Bailey, however, may buy Lugo a few extra weeks. But, ultimately, 3 shortstops is one too many.

I'm looking forward to seeing Lowrie back in Boston. Competition is a great motivator.

Wakefield An All-Star

Tim Wakefield is an all-star for the first time in his long career. He has accepted the honor with grace & dignity. Wake is an excellent ambassador for the Red Sox & for the American League.

Thanks to Joe Maddon for picking him. It was the right thing to do.

Sox Sink Mariners 8-4

Half the year is officially over & the Red Sox are in 1st place by 1 game over the Yankees. Did anyone think it was really going to be any different this year?

The Sox are on pace for 98 wins which should get them into the playoffs. Will the Yankees be odd man out again this year or will the Rays be unable to repeat? It's going to be a great 3 team race to the finish.

Jon Lester gutted out 6+ innings in a no decision today. The Sox offense finally put the hurt on Seattle's bullpen late in the game. Big Papi had 2 key hits, one a big fly over the bullpen, to help. Pedroia added 3 hits, only missing a triple for the cycle. How about Jacoby Ellsbury's sudden burst of power with another home run today?

Strap in for an exciting 2nd half. Every game counts.

Keep Penny

I know. It's odd to see the Red Sox lose a series at home, but it happens. Seattle takes the 1st 2 games with a 3-2 win today. The Mariners finish a winning road trip through the Dodgers, Yankees & Red Sox. Not bad for a young team with pitching.

I am a fan of Brad Penny. He throws hard for as long as he can which is usually 5+ innings. If he had arm trouble last year, it's a thing of the past as he hit 96 & 97 on the radar gun today. Penny is a moose & a bull. His last 5 starts are all quality ones which the Red Sox usually win. If the offense gave more run support today, it's a win.

Brad Penny is a keeper to me.

Wake, Sox Lose in Extras

Life of a manager is never easy. Every move is questioned. If a move works, you're a genius. If not, you're a bum.

Here's one of each from last night's game.

Genius -- Tito let's George Kottaras hit with 2 outs in the 11th, down by 2 runs. I'm screaming for Varitek to pinch hit. Kottaras calmly plunks a 98 mile an hour fastball into the right field seats for his first home run of the season.

Bum -- Tito lets Tim Wakefield go back out for the 8th in a 4-3 game. Wake gives up a home run to go down 5-3. I thought he should have gone to the bullpen. The decision may have had something to do with leaving Wake out there to possibly earn his 11th win & an All-Star spot. A clean 8th inning would have made Nick Green's 2-run double in the 9th the game winner.

I hated Monday morning quarterbacks when I was coaching. Overall, I think Tito makes more good moves than bad.

Trade Or Not to Trade?

I hear a lot of speculation about what & who the Red Sox may trade for before the July 31st trade deadline. Check our 5th podcast as to some of our own crystal ball picks.

One option that I thought about recently -- no trades. Why?
1) The Red Sox are in 1st place with the current roster.
2) Unless Mike Lowell & Jason Varitek are not going to play the rest of this year, where would you put a new addition? A front line player is going to want a starting job, not a part-time job. 3) Unless the Green-Lowrie-Lugo situation at short doesn't work out, there's really no room for a new shortstop.
4) As a part-time or bench player, who is out there in a limited capacity that can fill-in better than Baldelli & Kotsay?
5) The pitching staff is one of the best in baseball. Why mess with that?

I think no trades is a definite possibility.

Manny Back to Work Friday

Manny Ramirez goes back to work for the Dodgers on Friday after missing 50 games for violating the MLB substance abuse policy. No big deal, right?

Like A-Rod, Clemens & other cheaters Manny is about Manny. Rules of the road do not apply to him. We see it all the time. Talent lets you get away with things others are not allowed to do. Even the Red Sox, who made excuse after excuse for Manny for years, had to finally let him go.

When will it stop? To be honest, never. Pro sports are built around winning. If a player helps you win, management will put up with all the bad to get those wins. Wins equates to money. And money makes the pro sports world go round & round.

Not many heroes for kids anymore.

Sox Slap Back Orioles

The Red Sox scored 4 times in the 9th & iced the game in the 11th to win their 3rd straight road series with a 6-5 win today.

Contributions to the win came from an unlikely source -- Julio Lugo. Lugo had another good day at the plate, eventually plating Ellsbury with the winning run. He is batting over .300 in limited playing time this year & added 3 hits today with a stolen base. Where was this offense in his first 2 years?

I still see the Sox releasing or trading Lugo once Lowrie comes back. It's almost as if each game for Lugo is a tryout for visiting scouts from other clubs. He could re-invent himself in a different city with a different team.

Thanks, Julio, for contributing to the win today.

June Ends On Sour Note

The Baltimore Orioles stuck it to the Red Sox last night by scoring 10 runs in 2 innings. The Red Sox blew a 10-1 lead & ended up losing 11-10. It was a crazy way to end what was an excellent month of June.

The Sox went 18-8 in June. 10 games above .500 was good enough to move into first place. We saw the offensive return of David Ortiz with 7 home runs in the month. Starters Lester, Beckett, Penny & Wakefield regularly went 6 quality innings or more in starts. Pedroia moved back into the #2 spot & has responded well. Up & down the lineup there were contributions by every player.

Going forward, the health of Mike Lowell & Dice-K are issues for Francona to work around. With the trade deadline a month away Jed Lowrie's return may signal the end for Julio Lugo. Will Brad Penny or Clay Buchholz still be members of the Sox on August 1st?

We start July 1st in first place. I predict we will still be in first on August 1st. Let's see if my crystal ball is right.
