Allen Webster Pitching Himself Out of Rotation
Control. Control. Control. With any of the Red Sox young arms I look in the box score to see one thing - how many walks did they give up? It's human nature to come up to the big club & try to pitch too finely. The good young pitchers can work around their free bases. That's what De La Rosa & Ranaudo do on most nights. Webster & Workman have had more difficulty with men on base &, consequently, they have trouble limiting the damage. Given enough time & enough innings, all will work through it. But Allen Webster is not showing that there is improvement in his control on a game to game basis. Webster gives up 5 earned runs last night as the Sox lose to the Rays 7-0. He may be pitching himself out of a job in 2015. Even if John Farrell goes with a 6-man rotation, Webster would have to fight Kelly, De La Rosa, Ranaudo, Workman & Buchholz for a spot next year. Don't forget Henry Owens & Matt Barnes at Pawtucket as well. A number of these pitchers will be packaged up in a deal with excess outfielders to get a Cole Hamels or Giancarlo Stanton in the off-season. Right now it looks like Webster would be one of them.
