Down Year, Parity Reigns
As of today, only the Oakland A's have a winning percentage above .600. This could be a year where several divisional winners end up at 89 wins or less. Why? Pitching seems to dominate & power hitting seems to be elusive. At the moment there are 5 teams in the AL within 1 game of the 2nd wild card. Like the NFL, I guess mediocrity makes for more teams vying for the playoffs. And it keeps fan interest right up until game 162. You would have to look at the A's as the favorite to win it all based upon their season to date. But the Tigers, Dodger & Brewers may have something to say about that. As always, a Red Sox backup position in a year that we are out of it is any team but the Yankees winning is OK. That still holds true. And the Yankees are on the verge of missing the playoffs for 2 years in a row. I can do without the Dodgers as well, just because of all the ex-Red Sox castoffs. And I could do without the Brewers because of Ryan Braun & crazy man Carlos Gomes. I'd be OK with the A's, Tigers, Nationals or even the Orioles.
