A Day for the Ages

Yesterday is right up there as one of the biggest trading day ever in Red Sox history. 7 players from the Boston major league roster were moved in one week. It was a day bigger the Nomar trade in 2004 & maybe even bigger than the Beckett, Gonzalez, Crawford (& Punto) trade in 2012. Jon Lester, John Lackey, Jonny Gomes, Stephen Drew, Andrew Miller all gone yesterday. Felix Doubront & Jake Peavy earlier in the week. AJ Pierzynski waived earlier in the month. It's a new-look team with the Sox getting 3 already major leaguers, 2 of them former all-stars, back in return. 2 bats in Cespedes & Craig. One arm in Kelly. Another young arm of the future in Rodriguez. A veteran utility guy in Johnson. And a player to be named later from the Cubs. And we now get to see if Clay Buchholz can straighten himself out & become a veteran leader for the young guns of Renaudo, Workman, De La Rosa, Kelly, Webster & Barnes - all who will get their shots over the next 2 months. There may be a few more moves at the waiver wire in August as well. And you can expect Ben Cherington to be busy in October, November & December as well.
