Guest Article: The Good And The Not So Good

After watching GM Ben the last couple of weeks moving players in & moving players out, I thought about trades of yester years, both good & not so good. GOOD: July 31, 1997 - Jason Varitek & Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb. Thank you Seattle! November 24, 2005 - Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell & Guillermo Mota for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Harvey Garcia & Jesus Delgado. Thank you Marlins! July 31, 2004 - Dave Roberts from the Dodgers in exchange for Henri Stanley. We all know what David did!!! November, 1997 - Pedro Martinez from the Expos for Carl Pavano & Tony Armas, Jr. Remember 2004 & the reverse of the curse. March 30, 1978 - Hall of Famer The Eck & catcher Fred Kendall from the Indians for Rick Wise, Mike Paxton Ted Cox & Bo Diaz. THE NIGHTMARES: January 3, 1920 - BABE RUTH for a bag of cash. You are kidding me, right! August 31, 1990 - Jeff Bagwell to Houston for Larry Anderson. All I can say is Lou Gorman went to one too many buffets that day! Think about what Bagwell could have done at Fenway. It keeps me up at night. March 22, 1972 - Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for Danny Cater. Let me say that again, Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for Danny Cater. That's what I thought I said. Come on, man! Bronson Arroyo to the Reds for Willy Mo Pena. Bronson is still pitching. Willy Mo is playing in Taiwan. Kason Gabbard, David Murphy & Engel Beltre for Eric "you suck" Gagne. What was that 6.72 ERA while with the Sox? Give him another meatball. I would be interested to hear from others about your favorite trade or least favorite. Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater - I just cannot get over this bone head move. (Author: Coach Gaff)
