It took a swinging bunt by Jacoby Ellsbury to push the winning run across in the bottom of the 8th. The Sox keep the wolves at bay with a 7-5 win over the Jays, assuring a split of the series. The Wild Card contenders like Toronto, Minnesota & Chicago could gain no ground as the final games of the regular season continues to tick, tick away. It's interesting that the Yankees are out of the discussion altogether at this point.
While there were many contributors to last night's win -- Ellsbury, Pedroia, Sox bullpen to name a few -- I experienced one of those nights where the Red Sox hit home on a personal level. My wife and I hosted my 3 brothers, sister, sister-in-laws, brother-in-law & a significant other for a family get-together. 12 of us in all.
We had the Sox on TV on mute while the festivities were going on, even though we all kept an eye on the score. Once our night was over, no one left as we watched the last 3 innings together as a family. We saw a great come-from-behind win. But it was an even a better night for our family to be together with the Sox.
I think this scenario happens a lot in New England homes. It's why the Red Sox Nation is so unique. They are imbedded as part of the family.
