Any true Boston Red Sox fan knows one fact -- never count out the Yankees until the math proves that they are out.
I was watching NESN this morning & it showed that the Yankees are only 2 games back of the Twins in the Wild Card race. After a 2nd consecutive win in Tampa Bay last night the Yanks move themselves & the Red Sox closer to the top in the AL East standings.
What if the Rays pull a collapse like the Mets did last September? Could you see the Red Sox as the AL East champs & the Yankees as the Wild Card team? Very unlikely for the Yanks to sneak in, but the math does not rule it out yet.
The Rays have one more game tonight against the Yankees. Then they head out for a 9-game road trip which includes 3 in Boston next week. If they lose the AL East lead by the time they leave Boston, the Rays may be fighting to hold onto the Wild Card for the rest of the month.
September will not disappointed fans in Tampa Bay, Boston & New York for excitement down the stretch.
