Josh Beckett pitches 5 shutout innings. Mike Lowell drives in 4 runs with a 3-5 night at the plate, including a 1st at-bat homer. Tampa Bay loses in Toronto. Can things go any better for the Red Sox?
Now just 2 1/2 games back in the AL East race the Sox have won their last 4 in a row while the Rays have dropped 3 out of 4. The head-to-head series in Boston on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday could see a shift in the AL East leader if things continue on their current track.
I feel for Josh Beckett since I have experience with an arm injury during my pitching days. It is such a relief to get back on the mound & perform well. All the doubts are gone. The amazing thing, as Jerry Remy said, was the accuracy & control of Beckett after not pitching for weeks.
Mike Lowell was smiling like a 20-year old kid after the game. His injuries seems to be in the rear view mirror as well.
The only missing piece of significance remains J.D. Drew. Let's hope his BP goes well today & he makes an on-field appearance soon. We need everyone to make a serious run in the playoffs.
