Running Goofs Keep Game Close

Kevin Youkilis gets thrown out going to 2nd in the 1st inning, taking a big run off the board as the next batter, Jason Bay, homers.

Mark Kotsay gets thrown out at 2B trying to advance on a throw to 3rd from the outfield.

Coca Crisp gets picked off & is out by a mile trying to steal second.

These were 3 big outs that kept the Rays in last night's game by keeping the score to 3-0. If Rocco Baldelli launches one over the Green Monster in the 8th with men on 2nd & 3rd, it's a tie game. Good thing Pap was up for the challenge & struck him out instead.

In a close game you need to balance aggressiveness with common sense. The Sox were just a little to aggressive on the bases last night for me. In at least one case, it cost a big insurance run.

I hated running into outs as a coach & still do as a fan. On the plus side, though, it didn't come back to bite the Sox.
