Johnny Pesky Night

Johnny Pesky was sitting in the lobby of our team hotel in Fort Myers during Spring Training a few years ago. I was coaching a college softball team playing in a tournament over Spring Break. Even at 7:00 AM, he was very gratious with his time & most accomodating for pictures. Like every day, Johnny was getting ready to go to City of Palms Park for the daily Sox workout.

We had a break in our schedule that allowed the girls to attend one such workout. After they got a few autographs from players at the end of practice, I could see Johnny sitting on the bleachers & holding court for many Red Sox fans. I overheard him talking about Ted Williams & others from his era. The seniors in the crowd really enjoyed his insights into those days.

It was great to see a legend like Johnny Pesky give of his time so freely to others, strangers really. I'm glad that his number will be retired along side of his good friend, Ted Williams. Johnny has been a great ambassador for the Red Sox for his entire lifetime. Congrats, John!
