If the season ended today, the Boston 9 would play the LA Angels in round one of the ALDS. The Rays would take on the White Sox.
If I were Tito & Theo, here's my picks for the 25 man roster.
Starting Pitchers: 4
Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield
Bullpen: 7
Paul Byrd, David Pauley, Javy Lopez, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Jon Papelbon
Catchers: 2
Jason Varitek, Kevin Cash
Infielders: 6
Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie, Sean Casey, Alex Cora, Mike Lowell
DH: 2
David Ortiz, Jeff Bailey
Outfielders: 4
Jason Bay, Coco Crisp, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mark Kotsay
Left off the roster would be notables such as J.D. Drew, Mike Timlin & Bartolo Colon. In a short series like the best of 5, you need as much versatility as possible. I think the pitching staff & roll players are key. We'll see how close my picks come when the playoff roster is announced.
