It's not easy being a pitcher. One day you give up 4 runs & lose. The next day you give up 4 runs & win.
Tim Wakefield pitched good enough to beat the White Sox on Sunday, but lost 4-2. Paul Byrd kept giving the lead back to the Orioles on Monday night, but ends up winning 7-4. The old addage is that everything evens out over the course of a 162 game season.
There are all kinds of measures to evaluate pitchers. You have hits per inning, ERA, walks per inning, pitches per start, ERA with runners in scoring position, home runs, etc. Number of wins, however, is dictated by the offense & the opposing pitcher more times than not.
Byrd pitched well enough to win which is all you can ask from a #5 starter. I hope Wakefield catches more run support from the offense the next few times he pitches. His won-lost record is not a true measure of his contribution this year.
