If Josh Beckett is the ace, which he is, his job today is to pitch his team to a win. Knowing that Greinke is taking the ball for KC, that means Josh's job is to mow down the Royals' order for at least 6 or 7 innings. With the way the bullpen has been in a funk lately Beckett may need to throw a complete game.
With Greinke on the mound it might be a good day for an extea lefty bat in the lineup. Maybe Hermedia plays for Cameron to start the day. Maybe Varitek plays for Beltre with Youk & Victor playing the corners. It would be a great day for lefties Ellsbury, Ortiz, Victor & Drew to get hot. Let's at least get 4-5 pitches per batter & move Greinke's pitch count up so he doesn't go more than 5 innings.
It's early. There's 158 games left. But it's still frustrating to see the Sox stumble on offense & relief pitching right out of the gate. Last Sunday's win has been long forgotten at this point. But a win tonight erases the memory of 3 bad games in a row.
