Marco Scutaro tags up on a long fly ball to center & beats the throw into second, barely. Was that a good decision? Obviously yes since he was safe & he scored the winning run.
What about if he got thrown out? Scutaro would have made the 2nd out of the 12th inning & bases would have been empty with Pedroia & Youk coming up. Fans & sportswriters might not have called that a heads up play if it turned into an out. It might have been called bonehead baserunning.
Sometimes you have to take a calculated chance & Scutaro did. Not by any means to the same magnitude, but it did remind me of famous Dave Roberts steal of 2nd base against the Yankees. It's one of those bang-bang plays. Great if it works. Not so good if it doesn't.
Last night it worked.
