What's Happened to Ryan Lavarnway?
Ryan Lavarnway was my boy for the past few years as the up & coming answer to the Red Sox catching duties. I saw him play in the Arizona Fall League. His call-up last year produced 2 home runs in Baltimore in the 2nd to last game of the season. He even caught the infamous last game of the year with the memorable miscue by Carl Crawford in left to end the game & season. The brass wanted Lavarnway to work on the defensive side of his game, so much so that they were willing to let his offense slide. I'm not sure what happened this past year in Pawtucket, but Lavarnway is just not the same guy. He is very mechanical & rigid at the plate, often swinging for balls outside the strike zone. And his catching has featured passed balls. I don't get it. I hope he can return to his 2011 form before the end of this year. Either someone completely changed his game for the worse or he is having a sophomore jinx this year. Very disappointing either way.
