Why Not Use Mauro Gomez?

It's the top of the 8th last night. We are losing 2-1. We have runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs. James Loney is the scheduled batter. Eric Wedge brings in a lefty from the bullpen. I didn't get why Bobby didn't pinch hit Mauro Gomez for Loney. As it turned out, Loney struckout for the final out. With runs so hard to come by lately I would have tried a better match-up in that instance. Maybe the Sox want to see how Loney hits lefties or, in this case, doesn't hit lefties. More than his terse & undecipherable answers to pre & post-game questions this is the part of Bobby V that I question - his in-game moves or lack of moves.
