Porcello, Red Sox Agree to Extension
Nice going! Rick Porcello, age 26, will be a Red Sox for 4 more years thanks to an extension signed for $82.5 million. Porcello has over 1,000 big league innings under his belt & is now coming into his prime. At $20.5 million per year Ben Cherington paid him #1 or #2 type money as that's where they feel Porcello is in his career. And they sign him before he hits free agency where the money & years could have been much higher. Earlier, Porcello said that he would not talk contract extension during the year. After the Lester failure to resign last year, Ben made he & his agent one last offer that they couldn't refuse. Win, win. Porcello hits the open market again at age 31. Red Sox lock-up a young talent for his prime years while their young pitchers mature in the minors. That leaves Justin Masterson as the only starter from this year's staff not signed for next year.
