Barnes - Bullpen?
Matt Barnes. 24 years old. Power arm with mid 90's fastball. Should the Sox move him to bullpen? We discussed this topic on the latest podcast, hopefully to be uploaded soon. Opinion is split. Do you give up on a potential #4 or #5 starter for the future? Or is Barnes' path to the big leagues quicker by way of the bullpen? In his minor league career as a starter, Barnes has about a 3.60 ERA. Seeing him work out of the bullpen in spring training, particularly his last outing, he has been impressive. Barnes also adds some velocity to a bullpen that averaged just 91 mph last year. A guy that can throw heat is always a plus & he has a big 6-to12 curveball as well. For now I think Barnes best helps the big team by moving to the bullpen. You have to think that Brian Johnson & Steven Wright are the #6 & #7 starters at this point, so Barnes would be toiling in AAA for most of the season unless there were injuries. I say give him a shot at the pen.
