Mookie Betts - Keep or Trade?
It is my opinion that Mookie Betts is lost within the Red Sox system & the Sox should use him to bring back a proven big league arm. Here's why. First, Betts' natural position is 2B where Dustin Pedroia is expected to play for the next several years. Add the fact that the Sox just signed Yoan Moncada who can play 2B as well. Second, Betts made an excellent change of positions to the outfield last year, but here again you have too many bodies to climb over. Ramirez & Castillo will be in LF & CF for the next several years. This year RF will go to Victorino, if healthy, or to a platoon system with Nava & Craig. And there is JBJ & Brock Holt who can also play outfield. Third, given the short sample size of productive offense by Betts last year, he is a top trade name right now. Don't overexpose him & get negative results like those of Middlebrooks, Bogaerts & JBJ in their sophomore years. If Mookie can get you Steven Strasburg, I'd do it since Strasburg is under control for 2 more years. That gives the Sox top prospects like Henry Owens & others another 2 years to develop into big league starters. Despite his high scores on neurological testing Mookie is just lost in a numbers game with the Red Sox. Get something for him now instead of waiting for his value to decline. That's my opinion.
