Last Days of Lester & Price?
Jon Lester & David Price square off against each other tonight in the opening game of the Red Sox-Rays weekend series at the Trop. Both guys are the aces of their respective staffs. Both guys could also be wearing new uniforms next week as the trade deadline looms closer. Seattle is looking for a top pitcher to join their rotation with King Felix. St. Louis & Atlanta could be looking for a plus arm to push them into the playoffs. Just about every team outside of the AL East could be travel destinations for these 2 lefties in the prime of their careers. John Henry & the Red Sox management should stop acting like girls (excuse me, girls, for saying that) & just pay Lester what he is due. It's not like the Red Sox don't have enough cash coming off the books next year to pay Lester. Drew - $10m, Gomes - $5m. Peavy - $14m. Boston is not a small market team that is cash strapped, especially with their new philosophy of shorter deals. Victorino's $13m comes off the books after 2015. Maybe Nap gets an extension into 2016 to be a DH/1B & take over for Big Papi. And the Sox have plenty of kids at low cost breaking into the big team for the next 3 or 4 years. It will be hard to put people into the seats at Fenway with no Jon Lester next year after a disappointing 2014. Management is going to look cheap & stupid if they don't get Lester resigned & he walks or gets traded next week. C'mon John, Larry & Tom. Do the right thing.
