Buy Or Sell?
Ben Cherington & Co. have to decide which way they expect the 2014 season to go. Can guys like Victorino, Buchholz, Gomes, Middlebrooks rebound during the 2nd half of the season? Or should we expect more of the same sub-.500 ball? I think any decision will wait until the trade deadline at the end of July. In the meantime, we may see more auditions by Renaudo, Webster, Betts, Cecchini to give Red Sox management a better idea of what they may have for the 2015 season. More exposure to the big club by these rookies may also enhance their trade value. And don't think names like Pierzynski, Uehara, Lackey, Peavy & others won't be made available for the right deal if selling is the preferred way to go. You need to give up something to get something in return. The Sox have an overabundance of pitching to deal, both young & old. A 3-for-1 deal to get a power hitting corner outfielder may be what they need to do. A signing like Andres Torres is akin to signing Grady Sizemore. Minor, incremental improvement at best & not a long term solution. The next month will be very interesting.
