What About Stephen Drew?
As Ben Cherington goes into the winter meetings, Stephen Drew is still a question mark. Scot Boras is looking for a 3 or 4 year deal for Drew, but no takers yet. It appears that the Yankees may be the best prospect of Drew getting a long-term deal since spending in the Bronx seems to be no problem lately. The Sox do have interest in keeping Drew on a 1-year deal, perhaps 2 at most. He brings stability in the field & the ability for John Farrell to mix & match Bogaerts & Middlebrooks as needed. But Ben is in the driver's seat & Boras knows that. The Red Sox have the ability to walk-away from Drew since they have talented infielders in Cecchini, Marrero & Betts that could be called upon to play limited utilty roles if needed. Or, similar to last year, Ben could sign a utility guy like John McDonald or Brandon Synder. If Drew comes back to Boston, it will be on the team's terms. No long-term deal. One, maybe 2 years tops.
