Red Sox Sign Pierzynski to 1-Year Deal
Perfect duration for the Red Sox to sign a proven veteran like Pierzynski at the catching spot. Since Saltie was looking for 3 or 4 years with the Twins, Marlins or White Sox that length of time would have stifled young farm catchers Vazquez & Swihart for too many years. This signing also allows Ryan Lavarnway one more year to show that he belongs in the big leagues. The Sox finally have good depth at the catching position which should be a strength in coming years. Ross & Pierzynski both have contracts that expire after next season, giving 2 of the 3 young guys above a chance to catch in the bigs in 2015. I know that Pierzynski is not Mr. Nice Guy, but I liked an interview that he did on MLB this past year where he said that he feels his duty to his teammates is to be behind the plate every day. He & Ross should make a good left/right hitting tandem. Now the Sox can move onto signing Napoli & trading for my buddy Giancarlo Stanton. Nice move, Ben!

I like the move too. I wish Salty well, but the playoffs really magnified his weaknesses. I agree that Lavarnway needs more work as well. The Globe also says they let Bailey & Kalish go, which I am OK with.
