Extra Year for Big Papi?
It's Christmas. And besides Mike Napoli the Sox have no up & coming power hitters to replace David Ortiz. Big Papi must have been drinking from the fountain of youth last year to put together his great offensive barrage. The big guy continued his offensive attack into the playoffs, culminating with his MVP performance in the World Series. (We all know that Jon Lester was the real MVP.) Ortiz' agent is working on a 1-year extension that would end his career in Boston at age 39 after the 2015 season. The Red Sox took a lot of flack for signing Ortiz to his current contract after he sustained an Achilles injury. But he proved the critics wrong, very wrong in 2013. If the Sox extend #34, Ortiz & Napoli will both be free agents after the 2015 season. By then perhaps Middlebrooks & Bogaerts may be flexing power bats or prospect Bryce Brentz may have made an impact in the big league. Look at Raul Ibanez DH-ing at 41. Edgar Martinez played into his 40's. Unless there is a better plan B, I'd stay with Ortiz until he can't produce anymore.
