Obstruction 5, Red Sox 4
I couldn't sleep after watching the finish of a World Series game that ended on a once-in-a-lifetime, seldomly seen obstruction play. That one play negated 2 excellent comebacks by the Sox offense that had clawed their way back from a 2-0 & 4-2 deficit. For all of us who clammored for Stephen Drew to be benched, we got what we deserved - Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks was out of position & reacted too slow on a hard grounder by Matt Holliday that put the Cards up 4-2. Then Middlebrooks missed a catchable ball thrown by Saltie to get Allen Craig. Instead the ball skirts loose & Craig trips over a prone Middlebrooks with his legs up. Obstruction was the right call - you can't impede a runner from the next base without the ball in your hand. And Middlebrooks did just that. Why Saltie even threw the ball is another mystery as Koji had 2 outs & the bottom of the order up. The Red Sox rarely, if ever, lost 3 games in a row this year & I hope tonight's game ends with the series tied 2-2 & not the Sox down 3-1. I'm not sure if I can watch another whole game on Fox. I may just peek in from time to time. If the Red Sox stopped all their odd-ball plays & stopped throwing the ball away, they could be up 3-0. Instead, they will fight for their lives in game 4 tonight. Good luck, Sox. We need a sound game defensively tonight.
