Should Farrell Have Pulled Workman?
My only thought after the Sox loss to the A's 3-2 in extras yesterday was about Brandon Workman getting a no decision. Workman, almost Billy Rohr like from 1967, took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. The score was 2-0 after big RBI's by Dustin Pedroia & Brock Holt. Old friend Coco Crisp hit a ground ball up the middle that Pedey made a diving play on, but his throw was too late to first. No-hitter over. At that point Farrell could have taken Workman out, then 90+ pitches into the game, so that his effort could only result in a win, not a loss. Farrell decided to leave him in to face Donaldson. When the count ran 3-2 everyone in the park knew a fastball was coming next. Unfortunately, Workman sent a fastball right down broadway & Donaldson took it out of the park. Workman left having pitched 6 1/3 & only allowing 2 hits & 2 runs. A very good effort for his first big league start & certainly something he can build on. It's a Monday morning quarterback call, but I would have taken Workman out after the Crisp hit.
