Guest Article - "What's Happened to Baseball?"
Individual markets notwithstanding, it is sad to see the decline of our "national pastime" in the media. I understand that football, basketball & hockey have their followings, but their seasons are over now & the main focus should be on baseball. The Bruins had a great year; the Celts not so much; the Pats haven't played since the end of January. I know that shakeups & trades happen, not to mention criminal activity. But we have a team that is in first place by more than just a couple of games; a team that many predicted to finish last in the division; a team that is over achieving both at the plate & in the bullpen. So why aren't more of these so called "sports talk shows" spending meaningful time talking about the Red Sox? I really don't care where Dwight Howard is playing until October. The same, but to a lesser extent, goes for Jerome Iginla & Bead Stevens. ESPN STILL spends more time showing dunks than baseball highlights. Maybe baseball needs to lose its milk toast commissioner Bud Selig & replace him with a Roger Goodell or a David Stern. Baseball needs a commissioner that can not only run the show, but market the product. The trade deadline is coming & teams will be filling their holes & strengthening their squads. The second half push begins. Here's hoping baseball gets its due! (Article by Steve B.)
