Ryan Westmoreland Retires At 22

Back in 2010 Ryan Westmoreland was diagnosed with a brain tumor. At that time he was an up & coming prospect in the Red Sox farm system. His initial surgery went well, so much so that he played in the Dominican League as a DH in 2011. However, a second corrective surgery left him unable to resume baseball activities. Thus, the RI native quietly retired yesterday at the age of 22. Westmoreland's story won't get much press from scribes who try to write about every player's swing, pitch or play. But it's a sad story about what could have been. Good luck, Ryan, in your future endeavors.
