As opposed to the run-producing stat of OPS, WHIP is a measure of how many batters reach base against a pitcher. WHIP stands for "walks & hits per inning pitched." By formula for you math majors, WHIP = BB + H / IP. A good number for WHIP is something around 1.10 to 1.20. For example, Pedro Martinez set the season low for WHIP in 2000 with a number of 0.7373. For Pedro's entire career his WHIP number is 1.05. By comparison closer Mariano Rivera's WHIP number in over 1,100 innings of work is 1.0012. So again, anything under 1.20 is good.
