No Major Moves, Beckett Hurt
The good news is that the Sox took advantage of a rain-shortened outing where Justin Verlander was not at his best. Sox win 4-1. The bad news is the fact that the Sox made no major moves to get another front-line pitcher like Dempster or Johnson. Not shocking as we knew this would happen weeks ago. And now Josh Beckett is injured again. Craig Breslow joins the Boston bullpen as Matt Albers & Scott Podsednik join the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lars Anderson mercifully moves onto the Indians in return for a minor league pitcher. At least Anderson has a chance to make the big club in Cleveland. If Beckett returns to the DL, it would necessitate Franklin Morales rejoining the rotation & keeping Aaron Cook in the mix. If Dice-K ever gets through his rehab without reinjuring himself, you may see the Dice-man return for a few starts before exiting Boston at year-end. Maybe the Sox will look a little closer at the waiver wire now. So far, they blew it with blind trust in the current pitching staff.
