Ben Cherington, via the Sox website, has said that both #34 & #58 will be trying out the free agency market later this week. While talks continue with both Cherington did not feel that any deal would be in place before Thursday's deadline for exclusivity by the current club.
Pap has made no secret about testing the free agency market. He has been living year-to-year with annual contracts for the past several years. His arbitration number was around $10 million last year. That may be too much for the Sox to swallow at that position.
Big Papi is coming off a multi-year contract that paid him around $13 million a year. The market for aging DH's is not huge, but he may be able to find a multi-year deal out there with another team. The Sox would like to bring Ortiz back, but on a short club-friendly one year contract, perhaps with a one year option, based upon incentives.
Of the two Big Papi is the more affordable player. It will be interesting to see which teams pony up big money for these guys, given the bust by big ticket free agents like Carl Crawford & Jayson Werth.
