There was a panorama of news items yesterday about baseball & the Red Sox. Here's the Reader's Digest version of events.
- MLB will add 2 more wild card spots to the playoffs. Unknown whether these additions will begin in 2012 or 2013. If the end result is a 1-game playoff between wild card teams to see which one continues, I'm for it. It will make winning the division important again & put any wild card team at a disadvantage.
- Houston Astros will play in the AL beginning in 2013. This will even out the number of teams in each league to 15. Not a big deal to me. However, this move paves the way for future expansion - which I think is ill advised in this economy.
- Sox supposedly offer Big Papi a contract. If it's for 1 year with a possible team option only for 2013, I'm OK with it. I'm sure the contract offer was much less than the $12 - $13 million Ortiz received last year.
- Bobby Valentine is in the mix as a Sox managerial candidate. The fiery Valentine may be a short-term bridge for the Sox until they find a more suitable replacement for Tito. I wasn't interested in Valentine when his name first surfaced, but the other candidates don't impress me at this point. Having Valentine as a 2-year bridge wouldn't be the worst thing.
All in all, it was a busy Wednesday.
