Marco Scutaro will not get to test free agency as the Red Sox bring him back for a 3rd year at the club option price of $6 million. Scutaro could have activated his player option for $3 million, if needed, but would have probably tested the market for his services.
When healthy - like his infield partner Jed Lowrie - Scutaro has been a very serviceable player. He is adequate at short & hit better than average from the bottom of the order.
In addition, his signing gives the Sox another year of seasoning for upcomer Jose Iglesius who has not matured into a big league hitter yet. Iglesius is the shortstop in waiting that we keep hearing wonderful things about.
Scutaro's signing is a good one in my book.
