Sox Demolished in Opener 9-2

Poor starting pitching.

Poor relief pitching.

Poor offense.

You knew it was going to be a long night when a shattered bat fragment follows a ground ball to Marco Scutaro, causes an error & the Rays score the 1st run of the game. A 3-run homer later & it's 4-0.

You knew it was going to be a long night when the Sox had the bases loaded & Youk grounds out weakly to 3rd base. Hellickson had the up-tight Sox batters off-balance with a good changeup all night. The offense is definitely feeling the pressure.

We need a good start from a starting pitcher.

We need key hits with runners in scoring position.

Every game for the rest of the season is a playoff game. Beckett will be leaned on tonight to come up big against James Shields. The Sox seem to fare better this year against name-brand pitchers. We need a win to keep a split of this series a possibility.

As Theo said earlier this week, if we can't beat the Rays, then we don't deserve to make the playoffs.
