Mike Flanagan Dead At 59

Former Oriole great Mike Flanagan was found dead yesterday at his home in Maryland. Mike had a long & successful career in the majors which included a Cy Young Award & a World Series ring.

Mike was a friend & teammate of mine when we were growing up as kids. We went to different schools, so I had the chance to play against him during the school year. However, during the summer, we played on the same teams for many years. We made a good 1-2 punch on the mound & I was happy to be the #2 guy.

It doesn't seem that long ago, but our last tournament as teammates together was back in 1970 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Mike hurt his arm during that national tourney which put his future in doubt. His dad, a former major leaguer, helped him to slowly rehab it back to health. The rest is history as Mike went onto play 18 seasons in Baltimore & Toronto.

I wish his parents, brother, sisters, daughters & extended family my heartfelt sympathy in this time of sorrow. Mike was a unique person & a unique talent who will be greatly missed.
