Here's where we are at the start of play tonight - 8/12/2011.
Red Sox 72-44
Yankees 71-45
Angels 64-54
Rays 63-54
The Red Sox have a 10-game lead in the loss column on the Angels & Rays in the Wild Card race. The Yankees are one game back of the Sox in the AL East race.
The Red Sox have 46 games left in the season. If they play .500 ball the rest of the way, either the Angels or Rays would need a winning clip of .750 over the last 7 weeks to tie.
I like the math. I also like the fact that we have time to sort out the pitching between Lackey, Bedard, Wakefield & others before the playoffs. The last 7 weeks may turn out to be an audition for the playoff roster.
