He went to an Ivy League school, so we have to discount his power numbers due to the competition. (I take offense to that!)
He hasn't been a catcher long enough yet.
These are the standard "rubs" against Red Sox prospect Ryan Lavarnway. But all Lavarnway has done is prove everyone wrong at each level in the farm system.
Lavarnway is now tearing the cover off the ball at triple-A Pawtucket. Just like in AA Portland & the Arizona Fall League he has hit for average & hit for power at every level. Fans will get to see him soon with the September call-ups & maybe even sooner should something happen to Varitek, Saltie or Big Papi.
Lavarnway had the best home run per at bat ratio of all NCAA D1 players in the country. I saw him play & hit an HR in the AFL & immediately thought here is a guy on his way up.
My podcast partners have heard me talk about him a lot. I look forward to seeing what he can do for the big team later this year.
