After the first 80 games of 2011 the Sox are 12 games above .500 at 46-34. 12 games over .500 seemed impossible in early June when they were still trying to get to .500.
As it stands now, the Sox would win the AL wild card, joining the Yankees, Tigers & Rangers in the playoffs. The surprising Cleveland Indians are still in the AL Central race at this late date, as are the LA Angels in the AL West.
One big surprise is the Tampa Bay Rays. They have 45 wins & are a definite contender for the AL wild card spot. The Sox will need to beat out the Yankees or Rays for a playoff berth. Only 2 of the 3 can make it.
Isn't this the way we thought it would be? It's always the Yankees & Red Sox. This weekend series in Houston should help the Sox get off to a good 2nd half start.
