Pap Implodes, But Sox Win 9-8 in Extras

A 4-run lead going into the 9th should be an easy win, right? Not so yesterday as Jon Papelbon gave up 4 runs & got tossed in the process. It took the Sox 5 more innings to pull off a 9-8 win in 14 innings. The Sox win their home series against the A's by winning the first 2 out of 3.

Did I see a smile from J.D. Drew after he hit the game-winning run home in the 14th? I think I did. If you are only going to hit .225, you might as well make the few hits you get count & that was a good time for one. Maybe that hit will get him going for a few weeks.

John Lackey makes his return in the finale today. He will be on a 90-pitch count. As one reporter said, Lackey can re-start his season today & forget everything else. He can only improve on his 8.00 ERA. Another win to sweep the A's would be great before heading out on a 9-game road trip again the AL East which starts in Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.

Papelbon can be his own worst enemy with the umps sometimes. He's notorious for comments and stare downs on every call he doesn't agree with; however this weekend he wasn't in the wrong. Forget the inconsistent strike zone; Tony Rendazzo had no business walking towards the mound and instigating the dust up with Pap. Apparently he needs to be reminded that he's paid to be the bigger man. I appreciate that all pro leagues need to protect their officials but just once I'd like to see a suspension handed down for over the top officiating!
