Weigh-In on Buster Posey Situation

Personally, I think the injury to Buster Posey is unfortunate. Do we need to change the rules about collisions with catchers? Absolutely not.

First, this is such a kinder, gentler league where players from opposite teams hang out together before & after games. (You think Carleton Fisk hung out with Yankees players in his days?) My point is that there are so many players today who won't go into home hard that it's almost a non-issue. I'm sure that Cousins from the Marlins will get a talking-to by the Florida player's association rep about not taking out a fellow player. They wouldn't want to injure one of their own.

Second, catchers know how to protect themselves & it's usually the player sliding home that gets the worst of it. Remember - the catcher has metal gear on to protect himself. (Didn't Manny break a finger sliding home once?) Coaches teach catchers how to tag & avoid direct contact.

Again, it's unfortunate what happened to Posey, but let's not go crazy with rule changes. Feel free to weigh-in on this subject by clicking the comment button below.

It's part of baseball! It's not like catchers are going down left and right like QBs in football. If they block the plate, they should expect some contact. I was a catcher, and I looked forward to it. I think it is part of the mentality for many of them. Please do not sissify the game.
