Daniel Nava & Mark Wagner won't break camp with the big club. They were both optioned back to Pawtucket today.
Nava made a splash last year as a switch-hitter with power. His defense left a lot to be desired. Nava's spring training saw improvement in his defense, but his hitting was slow in coming around. Playing everyday in Pawtucket may help him to find his swing again.
Wagner does an excellent job on the defensive side of the ball. His hitting is spotty, but he will be ready should the duo of Salty & Varitek need relief help during the season.
Both guys are still in the mid to late 20's. They are nice position pieces to have available should they be needed at the big league level during the year. Just look at last year to see how important additional pieces can be.
