Jed Lowrie has a chance to be more than a utility infielder this year. In a small sampling of games in 2010 he showed much more power than Marco Scutaro. He is also a switch hitter.
But can he stay healthy? Lowrie has been plagued by the injury bug in each of his last several years. I saw him play a rehab game for Double-A Portland a few years ago. Taking ground balls before the game, he was very fluid in the field. He also went 4-for-5 that day at the plate.
Maybe 2011 is a year that Lowrie challenges an older Scutaro for more playing time at shortstop.
