Theo & Co. put an early Christmas present with a big red & blue bow under the tree of Red Sox Nation. News broke yesterday of the trade with San Diego to put Adrian Gonzalez in the Red Sox lineup for the next several years. Alleluia!
Gonzalez is the left-handed equivalent of Kevin Youkilis with a little more power. He is a Gold Glover at first base. In 5 years with the Padres in a huge park he averaged 30 HR & 100 RBI. The Nation is a buzz once again thinking about the 2011 season.
The Sox did give up 3 first-rate prospects, particularly Kelly & Rizzo, along with a player to be named later. The Padres get an injection of new young talent that they can control at manageable money for several years. Even though the Padres gave up a key player which they would not be able to re-sign, they maximized his trade value by pulling off the deal now.
With the infield solidified the Sox can now turn to the outfield free agents of Crawford & Werth.
Nice goin', Theo! Merry Christmas!
