What comes to mind when you hear the name Mike Lowell? I think of class & professionalism.
Instead of hanging around the big leagues as a DH for second tier team for a few more years, Mike Lowell is retiring as a Red Sox at the end of the 2010 season. As he said, his baseball career is more smiles than any downside to retiring now.
Lowell has 2 World Series rings - one with the Marlins in 2003 & one with the Sox in 2007. He was also the MVP of the 2007 World Series. Many players never reach those heights. Lowell also overcame a bout with cancer early in his career.
Lowell's retirement reminds me of Curt Warner, quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, walking away from his last year & $11 million because he would be unable to perform at a high level.
Some athletes know when to retire. Lowell made the right decision. But I wouldn't expect anything less from him.
