What Happened?

No sweep in Toronto. 2 out of 3 isn't bad, but 3 out of 3 would have kept us 3 behind in the Wild Card. Red Sox lose 6-5 after going into the 9th with a 5-2 lead.

This is Pap's 6th blown save of the season. On the plus side he has 29 saves to his credit & will reach 30 before the season is over for the 4th or 5th year in a row. And Pap did just save a nail-biter in New York by striking out Teixeira. No doubt that the league has caught up to him & he has gone from a 95% close rate to somewhere like 85%.

What's it all mean? Probably nothing for the rest of this season - unless the blown saves continue. Pap has one more season available to him with the Red Sox before he hits free agency in 2012. Unless something drastically changes, Pap is still the closer for this year & next. I guess we have to expect 85% now.

I would trade him. Get something for him now while you can, his value will only go down. The elite closers in the game have five or less blown saves per year. Papplemouth already has six, with six weeks to go. His ERA is about 3.35. In his worst previous year, year one, it was about 2.8. I loved the comment by the ESPN commentator this morning. He said "it's time for Red Sox nation to grab two beers and jumped down the slide". When you get a good outing from your starter, especially a starter that hasn't given you many, you need someone to close the deal. Even though he's had a few good games recently,Papplemouth is too inconsistent.
