After Jon Papelbon blew a big save in the 9th, his offensive promptly won the game in the bottom of the inning with a huge Detroit miscue on a sacrifice bunt. It's not pretty, but we'll take the win.
Clay Buchholz outpitched Justin Verlander. The Fenway crowd got to see 2 elite pitchers going after the opposition batters all day. Buchholz took a shutout into the 9th, but was lifted when the first 2 batters reached base. In the blink of an eye Pap gave up 2 big hits & the game was tied. It was a very rough outing for Papelbon & his performance would be fodder for sports talk on Monday had his teammates not won the game.
The Sox have a great chance to gain ground in the Wild Card as Cleveland comes into Fenway for 4 games. It's almost necessary to sweep all 4 home games before the Sox start a 10-game road trip with a stop in Yankee Stadium next weekend.

Finally we see how important the sacrifice bunt is. It always helps when the pitcher fields the ball!
