The Boston Red Sox, playing with a team of fill-ins, won their 48th game in 80 tries as they beat the Orioles 3-2 last night. As the statistical half-way point of 81 games in the season is reached tonight, the Sox are on pace for 96 wins & a spot in the playoffs.
Daniel Nava, J.D. Drew & Tim Wakefield were the players who came up big last night. Nava's pinch-hit single drove in Marco Scutaro for the go-ahead run in the 8th. Drew had 2 homers to keep the game tied in the early going. And Wake pitched 8 innings of 2-run ball. I would also give Kevin Cash props for catching Wake's knuckleball flawlessly & throwing out Adam Jones at 2nd. Every night it seems like a different player or two steps up to help the team win.
And with lots of players ready to return after the All-Star break how can you not feel good about the effort & gutsy-ness of this team right now as they get ready for a 2nd half stretch run. The Boston Red Sox are "the" story of baseball for the 1st half of 2010.
