Victor Fractures Left Thumb

The MASH unit known as the Boston Red Sox returns to Boston for the start of a weird week with two off-days on Monday & Thursday. Maybe that's not such a bad thing since they are pretty beat up.

The latest casualty of this first half is Victor Martinez. He suffered a fractured thumb on his catching hand on Sunday & will be examined today. No news yet about whether he will join several other Sox players taking a rehab vacation at Club DL.

Victor is a lot tougher than I imagined. He has hung in there with toe & hand injuries throughout the season. Maybe guys like Pedroia & Youk rub off on others.

Speaking of others, the offense needs to have others come through now that Pedroia & probably Victor will both be out for awhile. Youk, Beltre, Big Papi, J.D. Drew & others need to step it up. That's what good teams do. That's what the Sox have done to earn 46 wins this first half.

They fared pretty well against some of the best pitching in the American League, even though they were banged up. Some of these guys like Hall and McDonald are still stepping up. Let's hope it continues.
