It was a game that featured the return of Jacoby Ellsbury to the top of the Red Sox lineup. The extra adrenaline quickly shifted over to Dice-K who held the Phillies hitless through 7 + innings. Dice ended up pitching 8 innings of 1-hit ball & the Sox finished the night with an impressive 5-0 win.
A lot of things went right last night. Big Papi & Adrian Beltre stayed hot at the plate as both got key hits to drive in runs. The run-prevention defense was flashed around the infield from Pedroia to Ortiz to Beltre to Dice-K himself.
So let's review. Good starting pitching + timely hitting + excellent defense = win. We see moments like last night from time to time. The key to being a good team is to repeat that formula with consistency. That is something the Red Sox have not done so far this year. Maybe Ellsbury's return can start the process of consistency.
